Birdie and Alden Case seem to have gotten over their many differences, which almost led to divorce, to find a new passion in their marriage, the primary source of that passion being their common interest in private investigation work, they still enrolled in the private investigator course at the community college. In running into Birdie's high school "friend" Kristen Duckburn, they become socially acquainted with an adversary of sorts, Kristen's new boyfriend Tom who just happens to be Police Officer Tom "Air Quotes" Newton. While Tom states in no uncertain terms that he will never ask them to be involved in any of his investigations, he eats his words when he does ask for the Cases' assistance with his latest case, the murder of true crime author and podcaster Laurel St. James, who just happens to be a client of Kristen's family's publishing house. She was murdered just as she was about to record her latest podcast in which she was going to name the Roxdale Killer, a decades old serial murderer cold case. The reason for Tom wanting the Cases' help is they understanding the "nerd-speak" of many of the suspects, who include the others that have access to the recording studio, such as voice over artist Pat, Birdie's less than zen yoga instructor Wintress, and Katie Hiller who is trying to get her own true crime podcast off the ground. Birdie, Alden and Tom's assumption is that the murderer is who Lauren was going to name as the Roxdale Killer. What factors into what happens in the investigation is the Cases concurrently trying to trap a mouse in their house, and Alden's phobia to the critters.
